Electric field lines direction is always away from a positive source of charge and toward a negative source of charge the spacing of lines indicates the field strength Gauss's law determines the number of field lines

Gauss's law the number of field lines crossing a closed surface in an outward direction is equal to the total charge within allows for charge which is spread over a surface rather than just single point charges

Gauss's law intensity is independent of distance for an "infinite" sheet of charge within a conductor the intensity is zero
