Electric Field
Electric Field Intensity
the amount of force per unit of charge
direction is defined as the direction a positive charge would move if placed at that point in space
Electric Field Intensity
The source of the field...
Electric field lines
direction is always away from a positive source of charge and toward a negative source of charge
the spacing of lines indicates the field strength
Gauss's law determines the number of field lines
Gauss's law
the number of field lines crossing a closed surface in an outward direction is equal to the total charge within
allows for charge which is spread over a surface rather than just single point charges
Gauss's law
intensity is independent of distance for an "infinite" sheet of charge
within a conductor the intensity is zero
More about electric fields...
Charge density
charge per unit of area of the surface of the conductor
Permittivity
a proportionality constant which determines the magnitude of the electric field that can be established by the medium
