Instructor | Use stock from previous turning project. | |
Vertical Mill | Check the vise for squareness using a dial indicator. | |
Vertical Mill | Indicate the vise jaw to within 0.003 inches. Have checked by instructor. | * |
Layout Table | Layout the 0.500 slot. | |
Vertical Mill | Prepare to cut the slot by placing the part in vise using parallels of the proper height to allow approximately ¼ inch sitting above the top of the vice. | |
Vertical Mill | Using an edgefinder, locate the center of the spindle on the center of the slot. Lock the Y axis table locks. | |
Vertical Mill | Set up a 3/8 inch center cutting endmill. | |
Vertical Mill | Set Rpm and Feed rate for cutting the slot. | |
Vertical Mill | Take a .03 deep cut down the center of the slot using the layout lines as a guide for the length of the slot. Stay approximately 1/32 inch from the layout lines at the ends of the slot. | |
Vertical Mill | Check the location of the center of the slot. | |
Instructor | Have instructor check location. Be prepared to answer questions about table travel and backlash. Check and adjust, if necessary. | * |
Vertical Mill | Finish rough cutting the slot through the part. Use coolant. | |
Vertical Mill | Place a 0.500 endmill in the spindle. Don’t move the Y-axis now that it is centered in the slot. | |
Vertical Mill | Set Rpm and Feed rate for cutting the slot with ½ inch endmill. | |
Vertical Mill | Have Instructor check your setup and explain how to check the length and location of the slot. | * |
Vertical Mill | Finish cutting the slot. | |
Vertical Mill | Prepare to cut the radii by placing the part in vise using parallels of the proper height to allow approximately 1/2 inch sitting above the top of the vice. | |
Vertical Mill | Place a 0.25 radius cutting endmill in the spindle. Have instructor explain how to position the cutter to cut the radii. Set speeds and feeds for using a 0.25 radius forming endmill. Have instructor check the Setup. | * |
Vertical Mill | Cut the radius | |
Vertical Mill | Turn the part over and cut the other radius. | |
Vertical Mill | Set up an edgefinder and locate the position for the drilled and tapped 8-32 UNC hole. | |
Vertical Mill | Center drill and drill the hole. | |
Vertical Mill | Place the taper tap in a drill chuck. Put the spindle in neutral. Start the tap in the hole by hand 3 to 4 threads. | |
Vertical Mill | Drop the table down and finish tapping by hand. Use the appropriate size tap handle and tapping fluid. | |
